TOPIC: MGB replace the tie rod or the rack

Re: MGB replace the tie rod or the rack 5 years 6 months ago #48

PA state inspection passed. Replaced worn steering rack with good used rack with new boots and fresh oil. Next thing to start thinking about, replacing the hubs and wire wheels. The splines are looking very worn.

The worn tie rod was identified during the annual PA safety inspection. The mechanic suggested replacing the LH tie rod. A tie rod and new boots were ordered from Moss and delivered. Preparing to relace the tie rod I checked the RH and found movement but not as bad as the LH side. Go to plan B, replace the entire rack with a good spare from parts stockpile.

I have a tie rod that is worn and needs replaced (not the tie rod end but the tie rod). Should I order the tie rod and relpace it or just replace the entire rack? If I was to replace the tie rod is it easier change it with leaving the rack on the car or to remove the rack and replace the tie rod on the bench. New boots will be installed too.
