Installed upside down, not likely because they have a locating tab, unless it was forced or modified. The new float may be faulty. This is a good example of testing a part before installing.

I have a 74 Chrome Bumper "B".....my question is: can one install the fuel sender unit in the fuel tank upside down? If so....could this cause the fuel gauge to read backwards? I have a full tank of petrol and the fuel gauge reads just a tick over empty. I have a new tank and sender unit.
